My name is Vittoria La Matta, and I am a 17 year old who loves to cook. My dad is Italian and my mom is Mexican, so food has played an important role in my upbringing. When my mom married my dad, she was immersed in Italian culture and learned how to cook Italian food by watching and observing others cook. She quickly became an expert and now cooks Italian food for our family almost everyday. I also learned by watching and observing. Making food is an experience, and I want everyone to be able to recreate the recipes special to me and create memories with family and friends.
These recipes have been in my family for generations, passed down by word of mouth. I grew up watching my great-grandmother cook these recipes, and slowly I learned how to do it on my own. With Italian food, every family has their own variation of a recipe, as Italian food does not have measurements, but instead you feel your way through it.
I believe food has a way of teaching us invaluable lessons. I grew up in a home with the aroma of fried tortillas, tomato sauce, and basil always swirling in the air. At a young age, I was taught to take pride in what I do. I learned this as I watched my mother and father work as one unit, pouring their heart and soul into the dish they were preparing. Food was a way for our family to come together, laugh, and pass down traditions. A way to unite us all.
The beauty of Italian food lies in its simplicity: minimal but quality ingredients. It is not tedious or complicated, but requires love and care. With a few simple steps, anyone has the ability to recreate these pasta dishes.
